Webinar: Navigating the New NIH Data Management and Sharing Plan Format: Guidance, Resources, and Practical Perspectives (2026-09-02)

The NIH’s revised Data Management and Sharing (DMS) Plan format, which took effect in May 2026, changed how researchers describe their anticipated data and other key aspects of data sharing. Subsequently, NIH released NOT-OD-26-100 (Implementation Update: NIH Data Management and Sharing Plan Requirements) effective October 1, 2026, requiring all existing awards and applications subject to the NIH Data Management and Sharing (DMS) Policy to transition to and align with the updated 2026 DMS Plan format. These changes also have significant implications for librarians and research data professionals who support investigators in developing and implementing DMS Plans.

To help data management services respond to these changes, a working group of data services professionals updated a practical toolkit of resources and guidance (recently summarized in the July RDAP Happenings). In this webinar, four members of the working group will provide an overview of the new NIH DMS Plan format, highlight major changes, and demonstrate how the toolkit can support both librarian and researcher needs. Drawing on their experiences supporting researchers through the transition, the presenters will address common challenges and provide strategies to adapt to evolving requirements. The webinar will conclude with discussion and questions from the audience.
